I attended a meeting of the IFC, International fraternity council. This meeting addressed all the freshmen who were pledging a fraternity. There were about three hundred new fraternity members at the meeting in the Great hall. The topic of the meeting was about Hazing. The purpose of the meeting was to inform everyone on what exactly hazing is and the affects it can have on people, including death. The IFC president led off with a talk about the future of fraternities and how what people did ten years ago is no longer acceptable. We were then showed clips of examples of kids who had died because of fraternity hazing. One was of a kid who was forced to consume large amounts of alcohol and passed out in the middle of a frat house. When morning came, someone noticed he wasn't looking so good, and called the ambulance. When they got their, they confirmed he died earlier that night. The fraternity was sued and some of the members faced judicial charges.
This meeting not only brought to my attention all the problems associated with hazing, but informed me with the punishments and backlashes that can result from it. It brought me and my whole pledge class together and taught us of all the consequences of hazing and that it is ok to say no to things. This has broadened my experience as a student becasue I know what is acceptable and am now in a special group of people. My knowledge of how to address a certain typoe of audience has been increased because the way the IFC produced their ideas and point-of-views really got through to me and all of my fraternity brothers.

Event - Performance
I went to see The Glass Menagerie in the PlayMakers Repertory Company. The play began at eight and I was by far the youngest person in there. I had no idea that the plays put on by the students attracted so many viewers. The place had probably 200 people in there and they were very excited for the play. There were many retired couples out on a date that couldn't seem any happier.
Back to the play though. It's about a family living in a shanty apartment just after the Great Depression. The father has "abandoned" the family and the son wants to do the same. Tom, the son, is the main source of income for the family with the money he makes at a local factory. His sister is a shy girl who quit school because she was so nervous and spent her days walking around the park. The mother is oblivious to reality and reminisces about her days as a youth and all the gentlemen callers she had. Tom invites a friend, Jim, from the factory over for dinner in hopes that he will be attracted to laura, the sister. What he doesn't know is that he is already engaged to get married. Jim does find inerest in Laura as he feels he can help be more social and give her confidence. They talk in the living room and he makes laura forget about her crippled leg. They kiss, but then he tells her that he is engaged, but that she should keep the confidence she had with him and act like that all the time. Then Tom's secret about leaving to join the merchant marines is revealed.
At the end of the play, the crowd gave a standign ovation for a good 5 minutes. This play shined a light on somehting I wasn't really interested in or had much experience with. After the play I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It helped broaden my writing and language ability as I was required to write a theatre report analyzing the play.

Feeder 3.1 - Draft
Many people have different views on what the south is and what it means to live there. In Tony Horwitz's book, Confederates in the Attic, the south is portrayed as a place where the racial divide is still dictating everyday life. He only writes about his encounters with the most extreme southerners whether they be black or white. His recordings are not an accurate representation of the average southern experience. The Coen Brothers do a much better job illustrating southern beliefs in their movie "O Brother Where Art Thou." The movie doesn't just cover the extreme confederates, but also lets the viewer see the non-extremist southerners.
The Coen Brothers give more than one persons opinion on certain southern issues, namely race. For example, when the Soggy Bottom Boys went to sing on the radio for money, the radio voice wanted to know if they were black because he wasn't going to let them sing if they were. It makes it obvious that the man doesn't think highly of blacks, but it's clear he wouldn't be in the groups that Horwitz encounters. On the opposite side, the three escaped prisoners have to problem with blacks as they befriend one they picked up off the side of the road. Not only did they give him a ride, but when they saw the KKK about to kill him, they stepped up and risked their lives to save his. Of course, the Coen Brothers do show the extreme southerners with the scene just mentioned with the KKK. This movie also provides a little history lesson as it is set in Mississippi in the 1930's. This is important because equal rights has not yet been achieved and so it was common, as portrayed in the movie, for politicians and high-standing members of society to be in the KKK. There's more southern history in the movie than just the racial divide. The fact that the three escapees were in search of "treasure" that Clooney had hidden hits on the fact that people were struggling financially after the Great Depression and also hints at the "American Dream" that is a goal for so many. Also, they way that Clooney's wife divorced him and how she told her children is important because it touches on the domestic south. She tells her children that their father was hit by a train and that he wasn't "bonified" enough to be their father anyway.
The image of the south that is portrayed in Horwitz's book is quite different than that of the Coen Brothers. In the chapter "Cats of the Confederacy", Horwitz's first encounter in Salisbury, North Carolina is with a black man named Jim O'Connor. Their conversation alludes to the south being cleared of all racial tension because Mr. O'Connor says that he was surprised that he was "treated like a normal human being" when he moved to Salisbury. It then takes a turn in the opposite direction when Horwitz talks about the UDC and SCV groups in the South. At first these groups come across as just having southern pride and were mainly for people who wanted to learn about their family history, but after he got to know the members and attended some meetings, it became clear that they weren't only interested in their history, but also the beliefs that their ancestors held and fought for. The war wasn't just an occasional hobby for many of these people, but more like a part-time job. One man that Horwitz meets in an old gun shop is dying of leukemia and is spending his last few months learning his family's war history and attending those type meetings. Horwitz doesn't do a good job getting information from both sides of the racial debate as he spent most of his time with the white war buffs. The really only information given about the blacks perspective was from Michael King, a black preacher, who said how the confederate statues scattered around the town are offensive because they basically mean that they honor the men who fought for the suppression of colored people. The information given by Horwitz is correct, but not an accurate interpretation of most southerners.
Both the Coen Brothers' and Horwitz's visions of the south are correct in their own way and commonly highlight similar southern aspects. They both agree that there is a racial divide that exists, but the Coen Brothers do a better job of showing all parts of the spectrum, not just the two extremes. Obviously the purpose of Horwitz's book was to record the things he encountered, and that influenced his un-balanced accounts. However, he only went to places that housed extreme racial views so thats all he encountered. The disadvantage of the Coen Brothers movie is that it portrays a time that racism was common since the equal rights amendment didn't exist yet. The movie did, however, give a better picture as to what living in the south would be like as long as the seventy year time difference was accounted for.

Auto - Dying for Dixie
Ever since second grade I have gone to private schools that were majority whites. The were a few blacks, but no one discriminated against them. I'm sure a few of the white students didn't like them because of the beliefs they grew up with, but they didn't disrespect them and just went about their business. Alot of my friends and people i went to high school with fall under the "redneck" connotation. They love their big trucks and hunting, etc. It was very common to see someone walking around with clothes that acknowledged the confederate flag, and no one had a problem with it, or atleast didn't voice one. This is probably due to the fact that there were very few blacks, but they didn't seem to mind. I'm just assuming they didn't seem to mind because they didn't express any feelings about it, but I don't know for sure. This school was about a twenty five minute drive from my home so the things I encountered at school and in my hometown were alot different. Parties that people in my high school had were all white, not because they were racists, but because they didn't know any black people. On the other hand, in my hometown all the kids went to a big public high school so their parties had both blacks and whites. I never heard of any fights starting at that school because of a confederate flag or a malcom x shirt. Obviously Guthrie is alot more divided maybe because so much emphasis is placed on the flag and everyone there has a different idea of what it means which causes problems between the different beliefs. I honestly don't have a particular connotation of what it means, but I don't think it should be the root of violence. Everyones beliefs should be respected whether its the confederate flag or malcom x. People will do what others around them do and what they are taught and see in their parents. If good role models began downplaying the significance of the confederate flag in Guthrie I'm sure violence would subside greatly. The influence of everyones associates inevitably makes people do what they do.

Response to Dixie
After reading the Dying for Dixie chapter, I was shocked at how intense the racial problem is in Guthrie. The people that the author encounters are very extreme in their beliefs. Like the people with literature road-blocks that were dressed up and sharing their pamphlets trying to recruit members that were on their way out of church. They were bragging about the positions their kids were in in the group and showed how important this type of life was for them. I also found it crazy that a man was murdered becasue his truck had a confederate flag on it. I would have to believe that something more than just the flag provoked the shooters to follow and shoot at the man. This chapter also showed that some of the extremists just didn't like anybody that didn't have the same beliefs as them. Like the guy in the bar that ripped the authors sleeve just because he was asking questions about their views.
This chapter also brought to view the extreme importance of the confederate flag for many southerners, or atleast many southerners in the Guthrie area. Parents were threatening to withold their tax money and withdraw their children from school because the school board was going to change the mascot from two cartoons holding confederate flags to just an outline of the county. Also, the death of the young man brought many people to the area from many different groups such as SVC and NAACP to record what happens, help to family, and make him a martyr. They buried him with soldiers who died in the world wars and gave him the same type gravestone to symbol that the war hasn't ended, but just subsided a little and suggesting that they think it will rise again.
I found this chapter much more racists than the first, but it was interesting to read how people take the confederacy to the extreme.

Me and the south
I was born and raised in the south as I grew up in eastern north carolina. I have gone to private school since second grade that have been pre-dominantly white. Many of the people I went to high school with would fall under the stereotype of red-necks, but none of them act in racist manners. By red-neck stereotype: I mean they hunt, have trucks with tires and loud exhaust, wear jeans and boots, and have a southern accent. None of my friends worship the confederacy and praise the confederate cause. Even though I have lived in thes outh my whole life I don't hunt, but that doesn't make me any less southern.
Since I've been to college I have met all different kinds of people incluing different kinds of southerners. I don't have a problem with any of these different people, but I have grouped myself with other southerners from eatern north caroilina in the selection of my fraternity. Since I'm not a minority in the south I don't know what that would be like, but I know it would be unpleasant and so I make sure that I don't treat anyone different because of the color of their skin, since after all color is only skin deep. Overall, I'm very pleased with my experience living in the south, obviously i can't compare it to living anywhere else because this is the only place I've lived, but I can't imagine living anywhere else.

Response to reading
After reading the chapter from Confederates in the Attic I was shocked to believe that people devote their lives and all spare time to learning and praising the Confederates and their ancestors who participated in the Civil War. I have live in the South my whole life, I have played sports in the town of Salisbury, I went to a high-school that was predominantly southern heritage whites, but I have never met anyone as obsessed with the war as the people in this chapter. I don't doubt that these types of people do exist, but i think the chapter doesn't do a good job making it known that they only make up a small portion of the population. I don't have a problem with people having celebrations and meetings to honor the confederates as long as they don't make it a public event and interupt the lives of people not involved in that kind of society. I like the fact that the writer got the opinion of the other side of the spectrum to help keep his opinion unbiased. It seems as though the writer gave more consideration to the confederate people, but if you think about it the chapter was on the confedrates and the last few pages were just to see what the other side thought about how they acted.
Many people in this chapter are too focused on their history rather than their future. For instance the guy who was dying lof leukemia, he was using his last few months to learn more about the confederacy. If I was on my last few months, I would be enjoying life with my family not spitting tobacco in an old gun shop talking about the Civil War. I'm not saying its unimportant for students and people to learn and know about the civil war, I just think the people in this chapter are taking it a little too far, I know they don't feel the same way, but agree to disagree.

Observation Hour 3
I went back to the study lounge at nine thirty on thursday night to see if more or less people were using it. When I arrived only four people were studying. These four people didn't seem like the party type as they were all, except one, down there with no distractions. The one had his lap top with him, but was not using it. He was the only guy among three other girls. All the girls were in pajama lookin clothes that were more comfortable and symboled that they were not plannin on goin out as soon as they finished their work. The four students were dispersed evenly throughout the room as two were sitting on the window side and the other two were opposite the window. One key thing I saw was that two of the students had food with them. This is because the Agora serves late night from 8:30 - 11:00 so these students grabbed their food and went to continue studying. By looking at what the students were studying, it appears as though two of them had tests the next day because they were reading from a notebook making it seem like they were going over past lecture notes for review. The other two students just seemed to be doing their homework as they were constantly writing and looking at their books. These observations are very similar to my hypothesis because it suggests that less people are studying on niights that are popular for going out, bsecasue the students finishe their work earlier.

Observation Hour 2
It's about five thirty on Thursday afternoon. The study lounge only has three people in it not including the observer. This is probably because the Carolina basketball team just finished playin and students aren't here yet. Of the three students studying, there are two I-pods and one lap top. The person with the lap top is not using it. Just like yesterday, all the students are sitting on the side away from the windows. It's now about five fifty and students are beginning to come in. There are now seven people studying. Most of these students seem to be coming from watching the game because they seem hyped up after watching a win. Over the next twenty minutes, the lounge began filling up. There are now twelve people studying. Some of these students are definately studying so that they can go out later because they are texting. These texts are most likely to their friends that they are going to meet up with after they finish their work.

Observation Hour 1
I did my first hour of observation at a little after five o'clock this afternoon. There were only five students not including myself. Three of the students had their lap tops with them and two students were using ipods. Only one student was using both. Two of the students with lap tops appear to be writing papers and the other one is not paying attention to his. Only two of the students were sitting near each other and they appeared to be friends studying together, but weren't talking and distracting one another. One of their phones rang and she told the other girl that she would be right back confirming that they were friends. Only one of the students is sitting at a cubicle. Only one of the students has a drink and it has been untouched since my arrival. All but one of the students is sitting on the side opposite the windows possibly because there is some construction going on outside that is making some noise. But, the one guy on the window side is wearing an i-pod so it doesn't effect him. I credit the fact that there are so few people studying because it's a wednesday which isn't a popular night to "go out" and so people don't feel pressured to get their work done which corresponds to my hypothesis.
Hypothesis revision
I believe that the students who use the study lounge the most are those that are trying to get their work done away from their friends so that they can use the night how they wish. I think the most people will be using the facility on tuesdays and thursdays because those are the nights that most people go out.

Microculture
It took me alot of time to think of a microculture that would be worth observing that someone else hasn't already thought of, so I began thinking about the microcultures of some of my friends which led me to Granville towers. The micro-culture I plan to observe is the group of people that study in the basement of South Granville Towers. For those of you who don't know what this is, it is the 24-hour quiet study lounge that many Granville residents use to study. I personally don't use the lounge very often, not because I don't study, but because I prefer to study in my room where there are distractions. The couple times I have been down there, there have been a good number of people studying and doing work, but I never really observed them to try and understand what kind of person they are. This will be a good group to observe, especially on tuesdays and thursdays, because it will allow me to observe what type of people are studying on the nights that people go out. Because the students living in Granville, especially Granville West, are considered to be the party people, I would like to see if these students balance their fun with their school. As a student who lives in Granville West, is in a fraternity, and manages to get his work done before deciding whether or not to go out, I believe there are more people that do just the same or even better. My hypothesis for this microculture is that many of the students studying will be in there getting their work done early so that they can go have fun with friends at night.

Disruption
On Friday I decided to test my hypothesis that people are walking faster because they are running late. So I decided to leave for class twenty minutes before it started to observe peoples' pace. My hypothesis proved correct for the most part, most people were walking leisurely and often times having a conversation with a friend. I noticed that most of these people seemed to enjoy their walk to class and the fresh air. A couple of times, people were just standing in the middle of the sidewalk talking to a friend they passed, something the speed walkers don't do except for the "wasup" and move on. Many of these people also looked like they didn't take the time to shower that morning. I'm not saying they are dirty, just that they wanted to make sure they got to class and besides, who are they trying to impress during lecture. Another thing i noticed was that there were alot less bikers out. I attributed this to the fact that bikers don't need to leave twenty minutes before class as it probably only takes them about five minutes. Its pretty apparent to me why everyone seemed to be speed walking to class on they day I observed, because they were LATE!

Walking to class
As I walked to and from class today, I began to notice something about everyone including myself. I noticed that the speed people walk is so much faster than a casual pace that you see in the mall. Think about it, since you've been to college, have your parents ever commented on how fast you walk when you're around them? I know mine have. After noticing this, I thought about why I walk fast. The main reasons are becuase I'm running late or the weather is bad and I want to get inside. Observing the frantic walking done by the students, on a day when the weather is good, I decided that they were either running late or just excited to get to class. Because I don't believe in the second comment, I would say that most students don't leave for class until the very last minute.

RTP rivalry
Last night the heels took on a much weaker opponent, but one that makes a great game to watch. The wolfpack neeeded a win over carolina to make a case for the NCAA tournament in March. Last night just wasn't their night. Before the game i met up with a few freinds from state, including my twin brother. There was alot of junk talking going on, but they all knew what the outcome would be. As i was sitting waiting for the game to start, i realized why i loved carolina basketball so much. Its not just how good the team is, but the energy you feel in the stadium as everyone is eager in anticipation of the tip-off. The experience of watching the heels, and the goose bumps you get when danny or wayne drains a three is unforgettable and is something that never gets old. You couple those feelings with the fact that we were playing state, a rtp rival, the excitement couldn't be contained. I wish that for the first 5 minutes of the game I was sitting in the student section so I could jump and yell without being kicked out of my seat. I had to settle with just imagining myself doing it.
Anyway, the game wasn't the most exciting, but was nonetheless very entertaining. The first half was, just like always, kept close and, in some instances, state had the lead. This was due to their point guard, gonzalez, playing the best game of his career. I've watched a few state games, and this guy was making shots last night that aren't in his skill set. At halftime, the usual blues brothers routine came out, even though they do basically the same thing everytime, its still fun to watch because they change a little bit each time. last night, they had an old woman dance with them, and she was lovin it and the crowd loveed it. They keep the fans happy when the heels didn't play a great half, maintaining the energy in the fans which translates to energy in the athletes. So, like clockwork, the heels came out in the second half and just tired the pack out. Danny, wayne, ty, and tyler all scored over 15 points. Thats the distributiuon that wins national championships.

Strange
On my way back from english class today, I saw a guy riding a razor scooter. You know the sharper image toy you got for christmas when you were 12. I thought it was strange especially considering he was cruising at a speed no faster than a walk. Why would you ride a scooter that makes you look crazy if it doesn't save you any time gettint to class? Maybe he wanted to stand out becuase he loves the attention, although i thought the green hair could do that alone. I don't have a problem with this guys appearance or the fact that he was riding a scooter, I just qonder why he does it. There are always things I don't understand, like this psychology lecture I'm "listening" to right now. I have found that playing solitaire during class can limit the amount of information in which you obtain. Interesting right? Zoning in and out of this lecture i learn that by forming routines of not paying attention when your young make it harder to focus later in life. In my professors words, "learning is relativly permanent change in behavior as a result to practice or experience." This makes me think of sports becuase you practice to make permanent changes especially in habits. And of course, sports makes me think of tar heel basketball. I am very excited for the game tomorrow. My parents (UNC alumni) and my twin brother (NC State freshman) are coming to the game. My brother grew up a state fan his whole life, and although he tries to cheer for state (and will act like he is tomorrow) inside he wants the heels to crush the pack. Not like it really matters becuase that will happen anyway, but its principal. The only bad thing is my parents gave my brother two tickets so he is bringing a friend, most of his friends at state i know from high school, and some of them are true state fans (very annoying and anti-carolina). Don't get me wrong, i like hanging out with these guys, but state-carolina football weekend was terrible. I had about 10 guys in my room, 8 from state. I couldn't stand it. But tomorrow will be a different story, and obviously my next blog will be about the game.

One Hundred!!!
So it is eleven oclock and i've been awake for about 22 hours, but still running off the adrenaline from the heels embarrasing the devils. Coming into the game, the dukees were giving up an average of 61 points per game, and we dropped a hundred. When i saw bobby frasor knock down three 3's in the first half and deon score 10 in the first 8 mins, i thought this game was gonna be a blowout. But after we gave up the ten point lead in the first halft and they turned it back into an eight point lead heading into halftime, i was feeling nervous and a little worried about the outcome of the game. But, i regret doubting the talent of our players. Ty lawson scored like 23 points in the second half to go along with the rest of the teams normal production. The dagger in dukes heart was hansbrough's three pointer with 2 secs left on the shot clock to shut all the cameron crazies up. Greg paulus had his best game of the season and was still embarrassed so bad by lawson that he had to watch most of the second half. I almost feel sorry for the duke students who camped out in coack k-ville since jan 4 to get tickets to that game, bet they are sorry. If anyone sees tyler around campus this week, congratulate him on being only the second star player to go undefeated in cameron indoor stadium. And yes, danny green as well, although bobby deserves it, he doesn't count on the fact that he was injured last year when we played 'em.
Anyway, the excitement from that game was quickly overrun by my test today. I have been up all night studyin for it and am pretty confident. I just hope i can attack this test like the heels did. Well, i'm to do some last minute studyin before my test.

thursday below freezing
Today in my psychology class, we discussed sleep and its importance in the psyche and how vital it is that you get enough. I learned that if you don't get much sleep, you should eat more to increase your energy that was lost by not sleeping enough. Our sleep pattern depends on sleep drive and circadian rythms. After assessing my own sleep patterns, I determined that I have some sort of sleep disorder. Maybe it's a disorder that I create by not keeping a consistent sleep schedule because of my random all-nighters and mid-day naps. I'm sorry for boring you with my psychology class, but I had to listen to it for an hour and fifteen minutes.
On a more exciting note, I have regained the feeling in my face after walking what seemed like 5 miles in 25 degree weather. I don't know about you, but I hate cold weather if its not going to snow. Snow fell a little the other day when the temperature was 40 degrees, so, of course, it didn't stick and didn't prevent class on wednesday. I'm not sure when groundhog day is, or if I've already missed it, but he better not see his shadow or i might not see mine outside for another 6 weeks.

Oh what a night
After watching the heels trample the terps on tuesday, it felt almost as if they one again today. Both the deacons and the devils lost in embarrasing defeats. Wake lost by 27 points to miami, the team we beat by over 20, and duke lost to clemson by 27, another team we beat by around 20. My new favorite numbers are 27 and 3, the latter being the heels new ranking come monday. After these two games, the heels now sit atop the acc rankings and hold the number one seed for march in their own hands. If zoeller can make a full recovery and get playing time before the acc tournament, we will be unstoppable in our search for another championship. Even without the smooth shot of will graves who is suspended for the rest of the season for not upholding the characteristics of a carolina player (something he and phelps have in common) we will be a force to be reckoned with. I can't wait for saturday when we crush the already crippled cavaliers. This will be most enjoyable because my sister is a cavalier and will hear alot of talk from me.

Ty Lawson = baller
After watching the heels play an unimpressive thirty nine minutes and 57 seconds, they were tied to a mediocre florida state team. It was then, with 3.2 seconds remainig, that ty took the ball the lenth of the court and drained a three just as time expired. I was speechless. Don't get me wrong, I love Roy Williams, but his coaching decisions that game were questionable to say the least. We are strugling with the basics like blocking out and are even having trouble getting the ball in bounds. The offense had no rhme or reason, we might as well have been playin street ball. One ray of bright light was danny green who has, in my mind, been the most valuable player on our team this year. He dropped twenty to make up for Hansbrough's foul-troubled game. Anyway, we won and it was a very exciting night. Almost as enjoyable as wtching us win, was watching duke lose. I have to give Dino Gaudio credit, that inbounds play was genius, maybe roy was takin notes. He can use the game saturday against state as a practice for when we play a good team.

6:30 in the mornin?
Well, I am awake at 6:30 in the mornin because I managed not to go to sleep last night. I had alot of school work to catch up on, and it got so late that I decided not to go to bed. I got bored about thirty minutes ago and decided to research random things. It turns out that, while I've been awake for almost 22 hours, it only takes 7 minuts for the average person to fall asleep. I guess I'm a litle above average in that category. I hope I can stay up long enough to watch the demon deacons beat duke and the heels beat the seminoles tomorrow or i guess tonight. Another interesting piece of information I found is that more people die on average every year from donkeys than air crashes, jack asses. I think I'm going to try and finish up the rest of my work. I hope you're all sound asleep.

Livin' life
Hola, me llamo William and I, opposite what you may believe, do not speak spanish :). Also, spanglish will not be commonly used in this blog, but Tar Heels basketball will. Speaking of, I hope everyone was able to watch the heels beat a talented hurricane team saturday. I was there and felt like i was watching the best team in the nation exert their will on a good team. If you only saw the first half you might think I didn't watch the game, but after what must have been one hell of a halftime pep talk from roy, the heels came out firing. Wayne Ellington played like the Wayne from last year and dropped 7 three's in the second half, each met with a loud and probably obnoxious, for the people behind me, celebration from myself.
After the game I felt that I owed it to the team to party and celebrate their victory. So, I stopped thinking for myself and decided that it was the least I could do. You will never guess who I saw at the party, which decided not to start until 2 am, part of the reason I'm blogging so late 2 days after, but back to the point, Marcus Ginyard was there, and apparently a stress fracture in your foot doesn't affect your dancing ability. good to know for the future i guess.
Sometime this week I'm going to see notorious, if anyone has already seen it i would love to hear what you have to say about it. Speaking of movies, Taken looks like it's gonna be a great movie, if you haven't seen the previews I highly recommend you youtube it. But im off to find soemthing interesting to do. Maybe that's what my next blog will be about. Later
